Laser Vision Correction - LASIK method
The treatment with the flap. LASIK stands for "Assisted Laser in Situ Keratomileusis ', and means' shape the cornea by means of the laser". The LASIK is safe, reliable and fast. With this technique, when there is sufficient corneal thickness, the patients eyes with lower and medium levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism will be corrected perfectly.
The LASIK treatment in brief
- The eyes and the area around it will be disinfected with Betadine.
- The eyes are locally anesthetized using eye drops.
- The eye that will be treated secondly will be taped.
- In the eye that will be treated first a clamp will be placed to keep your eye open and prevent you to blink.
- In the upper two layers of the cornea a 'flap' will be made and folded over with help of the microkeratome.
- The eye will be lasered.
- The flap is replaced and smoothed.
- After approximately 24 hours, the flap will attach itself again.
The advantages
The recovery process of the eyes with the LASIK treatment, begins almost immediately after the surgery. The treatment has immediate results and is painless, because the correction occurs in the deeper layers of the cornea. The sight is restored the same day and is usually within a week optimal. You get detailed instructions in advance of Laser Company about what you need to take before and after treatment, including a drop schedule.
The disadvantages
Not everyone is suited for this method of treatment since there is a need of sufficient thickness of the cornea to create a flap. This method also has the disadvantage that after the treatment, an "weakened" spot on the cornea is left behind. You certainly need to take that into account. This laser eye treatment is therefore not suitable for people with a hobby or profession where there's extra risk of eye injury.
The LASIK treatment is suited for farsightedness, shortsightedness, reading glasses correction and for cylindrical defects. Until the optimal eyesight has been reached you'll need some patience, vision may continue to improve some months after treatment.
